Big Changes ahead for the Department of Defense

by Rachel Baker on November 6, 2013

Chuck Hagel is taking a realistic view and preparing the Department of Defense for the future of continued budget cuts and political gridlock.

The defense secretary is calling for “significant change across every aspect of our defense enterprise” in the face of plunging budgets and persistent Washington gridlock. And he says that after battling for three years, military commanders should prepare the Defense Department to live for the next decade under the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts of sequestration.

In short, the military must accept that Congress is not coming to the rescue.

“We do not have the option of ignoring reality, or assuming something will change,” Hagel said Tuesday in a keynote address at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
