Books for Dog Lovers

by Rachel Baker on September 18, 2014

Here is a really good list of six books that you will want to read if you are a dog lover. All of the books on this list are from Simon & Schuster.

I would also like to add one I recently read to this list. that will be coming out on October 14th, 2014. The book is called War Dogs: Tales of Canine Heroism, History and Love. The author is Rebecca Frankel, and the publisher is Palgrave Macmillan Trade. I typically review books over at Old Musty Books, but this is a fine as place as any for the review.

I will be completely honest, this was not exactly my cup of tea. I requested the book for review because my brother-in-law was a dog handler in the Air Force (btw: Happy Birthday, Air Force) and I thought I might find the book interesting on a personal level. I was pleasantly surprised. While I do not think this book is for everyone, I do believe if you really are a dog person and you want to read stories from military handlers about their courageous canine partners, then this is a perfect book for you.

I was unable to read this book straight through because the organization of each chapter didn’t really feel coherent to me. However, I caught myself picking it up when I had some spare time to read a few pages here and there; and that seemed to be a more enjoyable way to read this particular book. I was sort of hoping for more historical value from the book, but after finishing it, I think it was written just right. Its an overview of what a war dog does in the current military arena; with some great stories about the relationship between dog and handler.

Would I recommend this book, yes – for no other reason than I’m a big proponent of paying attention to what’s going on in combat zones; and this is an area that most people don’t know or ever think about. Also, if you are a dog person, then you probably won’t regret adding this book to your library.
