Small Towns You Should Totally Add to your Roadtrip Itinerary

by Rachel Baker on March 29, 2014

Small towns often get overlooked when it comes to itinerary planning for the summer roadtrip, even though for the last three years Smithsonian Magazine puts out a list of the top 20 small towns in America.

Take a look at this list, of 10 small towns in very different parts of the country. Consider adding a stop over to examine the food, history and culture of small town America in the area of the country you are traveling through.

We know, we know, we’ve seen this list before (from 2012 and 2013), but this one is different.

For their third annual list, Smithsonian Magazine examined 20 small towns across America with a population under 15,000 to find towns that are heavily-cultured (read: interesting history, good food, solid cultural institutions and education) and deserve our praise…and tourism dollars.

We’re taking a quick peak at the list’s top 10 but for the full list, head here.
