There is a really indepth article over at Vice Sports which talks about what happens to Cuban baseball players who never make the major leagues. The most interesting part of the article is what two guys went through to defect from Cuba in hopes of a major league payday after they’d been declared free agents.
If you are a baseball fan, this is an intriguing article. It follows the lives of Yuniesky Lagar and Erian Rojas, both declared free agents in August 13, 2013. These guys ended up going down a path completely different than what they expected when they arrived in Guatemala the previous January to work with a trainer, who by the way, can get up to 50% of the players bonus if he signs with a team.
